Song of the Day: Release Me

Near as I can tell, this one hasn't been released in the United States. At least not yet.

Caught some of the UEFA Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona the other day on Sirius. Good stuff. Coincidentally, the Howard Stern show is off this week for vacation. So in looking for something to listen to, I landed on BBC Radio 1 via Sirius.

On another occasion when Stern was on vacation, I had listened to the Chris Moyles show on BBC Radio 1 and liked pretty well. It's a morning show that they play on tape delay here. It's a group of folks on the air with a main host.. It's great hearing the accents and the different use of language. Some funny stuff, too. I enjoyed it and went back this week.

This was one of the tunes they played during the show this morning. Let's dedicate it to JD Harmeyer, shall we? Brilliant!

Song of the Day: She came in through the bathroom window

Back date this one to about 1pm Tuesday, May 26. And make it a guy, not a woman. Ah hell, just listen to this Joe Cocker remake of the Beatles classic tune from Abbey Road.

Can we get Eck back?

Eck's not perfect, but this Dave Roberts is hooooorrrrrrrrrible.

Song of the Day: Burn one down

I just discovered this tune on Pandora. I set up a Jack Johnson channel and this Ben Harper tune was one suggested. It fills me with a feeling of nostalgia.

We wuz robbed!

Seriously, yesterday afternoon in broad daylight someone broke into the home of the noternies and took a bunch of stuff. All her gold jewelry, every pair of earrings she owned, a couple of sentimentally significant pieces from family, two digital cameras, a video camera, the Wii system, including all controllers, games and controller recharging stand, an acoustic guitar and hard carrying case and a couple of containers of change from around the house.

mrs. noternie arrived home first and discovered the theft. The police (or the po-po if you use my niece's phrase) came and took a report and listing of all stolen stuff. A neighbor actually saw a very strange guy walking down the street with a black duffel bag and--you guessed it--a black guitar case. Said he gave her the creeps. She was worried he would approach her, in which case her plan was to spray him with the garden hose she was using to water the grass, grab her daughter who was sleeping in her car seat and head for the house.

Turns out he had tried to get into a neighbor's house, but didn't make it all the way in. Someone over that way also apparently got a look at the guy.

So now we've got to go through a sucky inventory and estimating process to do a claim for the insurance company, I guess. Investigations are also underway for an alarm system for the nest.

It's all very sucky, sucky, sucky. My wife has lost some things that are very important to her. The stuff taken from me was mostly just stuff. For both of us, the biggest loss is some of her happiness and her feeling of comfort and security in the house.

Pardon my French, but you're an asshole, burglar guy. I am wishing some very uncomfortable experiences on your person.

Song of the Day: Slow Boat to China

Circa a long time ago. Was reminded of this songs wonderfullness the other day when I heard it on Radio Margaritaville, Sirius Channel 31. Now I can't get it out of my head and I don't mind.

I'd like to get mrs. noternie on a slow boat to China.

Mickey Mouse is dead again (kind of )

One guy's been doing the voice of Mickey Mouse for more than 30 years. He's one of only three guys who have done it. He took over for the guy who took over for Disney himself! He just died.

Who was by his side when he passed? Minnie Mouse, of course. Actually, it was. His wife has been the voice of Minnie Mouse.

Hope all is well in the Pointy Universe

It's been quiet over there for a little too long. Here's hoping KJ is doing ok and will soon be doing well enough to post again.

Speaking of business expo activity...

I'm not sure the Globe or Herald have run an article giving tips to attendees of business expos or trade shows or job fairs. But I'm pretty sure they'd side with me in this scenario.

Tip #1 to the two guys having a chat about drumming up business either in a booth or on the floor of the New England Expo for Business or another one coming up in Metro West: When you're having your conversation while standing at the urinals in the men's room, you might want to wash your hands on the way out if you hope to do business with anyone else in there, like me.

I wish I had gotten their personal and company names off their badges. Alas, I was busy washing my hands. Wouldn't you love to know before a meeting that John Doe from Business, Inc doesn't wash his hands? Maybe I could do a composite sketch...

Song of the Day: Everlong

Foo Fighters. Acoustic version of their rockin' classic.

Couldn't think of a reason not to, so....

Yesterday I registered to be a bone marrow donor. They had a booth set up at a business expo I attended. I saw the sign and wondered about it, so I stopped and asked a few questions and they gave me some information. After three or four minutes I couldn't think of a single reason why I shouldn't do it. So I did it.

And even though a few people have suspected that bone marrow donation is a painful procedure, I hope they do call me and say they need it. It'd be really nice to know you gave a chance to someone facing those long odds, wouldn't it?

Go ahead, check it out.

Song of the Day: End Of The World as We Know It

Has anyone seen it yet?

There's bound to be a "the end of Boston as kind of sports" story coming, if it's not out already. Some sort of analysis about how a curse has returned, that the championship spigot has been shut off in Boston.

Here's what they'll cite:
Patriots get perfect season, but only regular season.
DOWN GOES BRADY! DOWN GOES BRADY!
Garnett injured.
Sox lose to Rays(!) in ALCS.
ORRtease can't hit anymore.
Two Game 7 loses in the TDBanknorthFleetBankBostonNotAsLoudAsTheOld Garden in a four day span.

Yes, some of these things overlap with the Celt's banner last year and BU winning the national championship in hockey. But we're not talking about geniuses here, we're talking about people who believe in curses and don't really like Boston. People like CHB.

Song of the Day: Nutty

By the Ventures. Go Bruins!

Note: Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a version of a song called Nut Rocker origianlly recorded by B Bumble and the Singers. But I think this is the one used by the Bruins and Channel 38 back in the day.

Wonder if Freddy will be in the building tonight.

I'm into the Bruins again

I've really developed a dislike for the Carolina Whalers and their coach, Paul Maurice. It was surprisingly and thoroughly satisfying to watch his bitter expression as the Bruins stretched the 2-1 lead back up to 2 at 3-1 and then 4-1.

Sure, a good deal of it is probably attributable to the sucker punch and the reaction of the league and the Whalers, but the NHL playoffs are always exciting. First round demolition of the Habs was fun, too.

Merloni, Duquette on WEEI yesterday

Lou, former Sox player, Mass native, now regular on the sports media circuit here--made news with some comments over the weekend about the former Red Sox regime’s handling of the steroids issue. One incident in particular, actually.

He was doing a regular shift on WEEI yesterday and they had Dan Duquette, who had slammed Merloni’s comments, call in and discuss it with Lou live. You can listen to the exchange here.

Clearly, if the Sox bras--and potentially management of other clubs--didn’t tell players to take steroids, they knew they were being used and the advice they gave encouraged their use. When you go from warning about the risks to advising about the rewards when they are used in a specific way, you not only concede they are being used widely by players, but you condone it. And when a team condones something like that, you encourage it, if only indirectly.

Duquette’s a schmo, by the way.

Song of the Day: Why Can't I Be You

The Cure; good band. This is a fun tune, which is not what they're usually known for. Classic 80s.

Team logos/unis

For my money, there are not many sports logos or uniform designs better than the Chicago Blackhawks.

The main logo and the shoulder logos are both great. Glad they don't try to "modernize" them.

Zoinks!

Manny got nabbed!

I expect we'll be hearing a lot about this.

Two different opinions on Jabba Chamberlain hitting Jason Bay

I have no huge problem with what Jabba the Hutt did. Repeatedly throwing at Youk for no apparent reason-and at his head-is a problem, but this isn't that bad. It's a little bush that he's got to throw at so many guys so often, but whatever. Just as long as Jeter's willing to take a few in the back or on those wrists he hangs in the middle of the strike zone.

Either that or Bay's allowed to take four minutes to round the bases the next time he takes Jabba deep.

First team to have a player charge the mound is a rotten egg.

Song of the Day: Meanwhile

Heard this Mac MacAnally tune on Sirus 31, Margaritaville. You're not likely to hear it elsewhere: MacAnally is a member of Jimmy Buffet's Coral Reefer Band. Good tune.

Observations from 93S

The guy driving the Camry with Mass plate "NASDAQ" looked a heck of a lot like Gimly, from the "Lord of the Rings" movies. Had the hair and beard. The fact that he was slumped down or reclined and chomping a cigar helped, too.

Impressive

This is. I always wished the Sox would let Harris throw from the other side. Thought they were fuddy-duddies for not.

I've been able to train myself to throw a football pretty well with both arms, but there's a lot more mechanics involved in pitching. There's also a lot more talent required to get a professional contract.

The funniest aspect of the story might be the rule they made up to deal with the switch pitcher-switch hitter showdowns.

Song of the Day: Red Hill Mining Town

U2, from their brilliant Joshua Tree.

I've been listening to quite a bit of U2 lately.

#54

Coffee: Black.

Here's where our nation's English heritage is a win-lose. Coffee took off here in large part due to the boycott on tea. But they were still such English-y tea lovers that they added sugar and cream to sweeten it up.

My mom drinks it black and maybe that's why I do. I like the taste better than the sweet stuff and it makes life a lot easier for me that I don't have to worry about finding and adding things. Just brew, pour and drink.

I can't believe I'm saying this

Bravo, Jeff Jacoby. The resident conservative columnist at the Globe explains the reasons for the demise in newspapers. Most welcome is that he writes the column to debunk the popular conservative theory on the subject.

I can't remember ever agreeing with a Jacoby column before today.

Song of the Day: Mexican Hat Dance

Happy Cinco de Mayo. Can you do the Mexican Hat Dance?

Goodbye Dom DeLuise

Either he got too old, too fat or too dated. For some reason, Dom DeLuise hasn't been very visible or popular in a number of years. But boy, was he funny.

"The End" was one of the first movies rented for the family VCR back in the day. And his appearances in the Mel Brooks movies were excellent as well.

To me he might be the prototypical "funny fat guy."

Excellent news

Have you been waiting for this like I've been waiting for this? I think they should do this twice a year, every year.

Here's a good one

A Red Sox-Yankee game starting at 9:20 due to a rain delay.

Tune in at breakfast to catch the 7th and 8th inning before heading out to work!

The Garnett difference

When you see the Celtics get in the lane and then freeze and look for a way to pass out because of the shotblocking presence of Dwight Howard, you realize what the Celtics miss in Kevin Garnett.

Celts miss Garnett desperately on the defensive end. They've looked lost on the offensive end the last few games, too.

A few games late

If Marbury was able to play the way he's playing tonight a few games ago, the Bulls series might not have seen so many overtimes...or games.

Nice that he's finally sowing up, though.

Song of the Day: Yellow Submarine

Hard to go wrong with the Beatles.

Song of the Day II: Steppin' Out

Most probably know it. I'm not sure how many like it. I do not. But a coworker heard it while on vacation with her husband, parents and in laws and remarked how everybody knew it and was bopping along.

I present it here so that she can reminisce about a warm climate with pool, beach, drink and no responsibility to go to work.

Song of the Day: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

Amy Winehouse puts her gift to work in a remake of the Shirelles' classic. Too bad she's such a trainwreck of a human being. Winehouse is a very talented singer.

Note: Gerry Coffin and Carole King wrote the song. It's been done by lots of prominent folks since. And with good reason. Great song.
